Start Doing

Question:  What could you accomplish if you could get 30% more done each day with the same people, equipment and facilities you already have?

The problem today is…

The nature of work is changing, and faster than ever.  It’s not about just following the same routines that worked last year.  Here are just a few significant trends:

  • Dynamic Client needs: they expect better results, sooner
  • Clients also want a higher degree of customization
  • Work is being done simlutaneously at multiple locations
  • Multi-tasking and constantly changing priorities

Yesterday’s work processes can’t keep up.  The work becomes a struggle to just get through the day.  It’s exhausting.  Without the right approach, improvement doesn’t happen.  Result: Most organizations keep their best people stuck in really bad processes!

What is “AptoLean”?     (Apto: from the Latin, meaning “to adapt”)

AptoLean provides an effective solution.  It is Adaptive Work Design.  It intelligently combines structure and flexibility.  It pulls isolated individuals together into improvement teams. Soon that  work environment stops being a barrier to your success and becomes your key competitive advantage.

AptoLean includes the basic value of heritage Lean Six Sigma.  However, unlike many alternate approaches that simply lag behind the curve, it is not confined by strict Factory age thinking.  The focus is on the demands of the work you are actually doing.

My background makes it possible for me to develop and lead this adaptive approach:

  • Production Processes at GM
  • Process improvement in  design work for Spacecraft, complex electronics and radar systems at GE and Lockheed Martin
  • Streamlining HR, Accounting, Purchasing and Procurement
  • State and Federal Government processes
  • Complex Hospital and Healthcare environments as Director of Lean Six Sigma for Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and as a consultant to Fox Chase Cancer Center

My work also has a greater depth based on accomplishing a Ph.D.   focused on Team Dynamics and Adult Learning at Temple University.   I have also completed advanced courses at the Dynamic Learning Center at UC Santa Cruz about the psychology of change and motivation.

How does AptoLean create better Work Environments?

If you have ever watched a team trying to win the game as time is running out, you know that the whole effort can be disrupted by a small detail.  One penalty, a dropped pass or a fumble can often mean defeat.  Yet, in many organizations, there are mistakes, fumbles and dropped passes on every play.

AptoLean involves the working team in designing and using more effective, responsive and efficient work processes.  Starting with those details, daily routines actually become routine.  The links between people, teams and departments are strengthened until the whole Value Stream becomes fully activated.

Why not take the time you are using to solve the same problem over again every day and just fix it forever?  By doing this one step at a time that wasted energy becomes available to take your value added work to a whole new level.  It can add 30% more capacity to your existing resources.

How can it work for you?

Individuals:

  • Online resources
  • Open enrollment training sessions
  • Individual Coaching and Mentoring051416_1811_Performance1.png

Organizations:

  • Quick Start on-site Workshops and Team Based Training
  • Department Based Projects and Kaizen Events
  • Value Stream design and implementation
  • Organization wide Transformation
  • Ongoing Coaching and Consulting

Many clients begin with a focus on a particular high priority problem area.  A small and select team learns the basic approach and then begins to eliminate defects, delays and cost factors.  Improvement begins in days and weeks, not months.

These initial efforts in one area can build to include complete Departments, Value Streams or Service Lines.  By saving cost and increasing effective capacity at each step along the way resources become available to support further improvements.  This limits the out of pocket investment needed.  And making the approach organization-wide gives everyone the same set of effective tools for process design.  Depending on the need, internal experts can be developed to the Green Belt level and beyond.
